Workshop on Social Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe

In this workshop, we want to address the impact of social media as technologies of political influence in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and beyond. The workshop focuses on issues such as disinformation, polarization, and politicization. Its aim is to reflect on democracy and citizenship practices in CEE through the prism of social media as "dual-use" technologies, which can offer new potential for democracy but also threaten it at the same time.

The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, "The European Union and Its Rural Periphery in East Central Europe" at Leipzig University and will bring together scientists from the SoMe4Dem project with scholars from Czech Republik, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Belarus and Ukraine.
