SoMe4Dem Stakeholder Event

Resilient Democracy Online: Reimagining Civic Debate on Social Media
A SoMe4Dem Stakeholder Event

This SoMe4Dem stakeholder event focuses on the theme of resilience in the face of growing challenges to democratic discourse online, regulatory frameworks, and online information ecosystems more broadly. Set against the backdrop of shifting political norms, such as the potential deregulation of disinformation in contexts like the US, the event explores how (European) digital ecosystems can develop long-term resilience to external disruptions. Key themes include technical and institutional preconditions for open civic debate online, how to foster measured disagreement and deliberation online, and socio-technical principles for the use of social media in democratic societies. The workshop will investigate these themes from different angles, including aspects of polarization, cultural memory, and public trust, bringing together scientific results of the SoMe4Dem project and insights from relevant stakeholders. The three-day format, in partnership with BRIAS, will offer a forum for presentations and in-depth talks, as well as foster collaborative, solution-oriented discussions.
